Banquet Auction/Raffle and Best Student Presentation Award
The NAAFE Forum 2013 is pleased to announce we will be hosting an Auction/Raffle during the Forum’s Banquet, taking place on Thursday, May 23rd. Funds raised from this event will be used to recognize the Best Student Presentation with a $250 cash award and fund the publication of the Best Student Paper in Marine Resource Economics (MRE, NAAFE’s official affiliated journal) estimated at $1,250. Depending upon how much money is raised, student subscriptions to MRE for those students interested ($30 each on a first come, first serve basis) or publication charges in MRE for other student papers presented at the NAAFE meetings (up to $750 each on a first come, first serve basis) may be funded.
Past Forums have recognized the Best Student Paper but have neglected the efforts of students in preparing and delivering high-quality presentations. By recognizing the Best Student Presentation we would be providing guidance on the important attributes of presenting research papers. Funding the publication of the Best Student Paper in MRE would help incentivize students to submit their paper to MRE and funding student subscriptions would emphasize the importance of keeping informed with the latest research in the field. Plus, the actual event should provide entertainment at the banquet.
The Best Student Presentation Award is available to all individuals currently enrolled in a graduate program (i.e., have not yet completed all requirements for degree completion). Students need to be nominated for consideration prior to the conference so we can schedule two judges to attend (a total of 6 judges will be named to decide the winner). Nominations, including self-nominations, consist of simply sending the name and presentation title of any student wishing to be considered for this award to Sherry Larkin at SLarkin@ufl.edu .
Presentations will be judged on the following criteria:
1. Quality of visual aids
2. Presentation style
3. Time management (i.e., success at covering all aspects of outline)
4. Study is well-motivated and results were well interpreted
Financing the publication of the Best Student Paper in MRE (i.e., paying the page charges) is available to the winner of that competition (which is determined by NAAFE), regardless of student status at the time of the conference.
All funds collected in excess of that provided to the winner of the Best Student Presentation and to cover the costs of administering the event (capped at $250 for raffle tickets, rental of two tables during the banquet, printing promotional flyers, and banquet attendance by the auctioneer) will be collected by, and effectively donated to the MRE Foundation Inc. to support student subscriptions or publications in the journal.
This Auction/Raffle would not be possible without the generosity of various partners who contributed wonderful prizes for this event.
If you are interested in contributing prizes to the Auction/Raffle, please contact Mendy Willis directly at MendyWillis@ufl.edu or (352) 294-0886. You may also bring the item with you to the conference. If you would like to mail something before, you can either address:

This is a one-time event staged by the organizers of the NAAFE 2013 that is primarily intended to: (1) help provide guidance to students when preparing their presentations and as a means to recognize students that do an impressive job of promoting their research; and (2) help the Best Student Paper recipient fund the publication of his/her paper if submitted to MRE and encourage submission to MRE as the official affiliate journal of NAAFE. The event is also part of the entertainment during the banquet and, as such, should not be considered a new component to NAAFE Forums.
