Merging Crop Modeling and Genetics

Overview & Objectives

Meeting the G2P Challenge: Building reliable connections between the genotype and its
corresponding phenotypic spectrum is one of the biggest challenges in plant biology today.
Predicting crop phenotypes is an objective shared by crop modelers and plant geneticists/breeders. Dynamic crop simulation models offer an opportunity to build these connections. This workshop addressed methods and procedures used to develop gene-based models.

The main objectives of this workshop were as follows: 1) to address methods and procedures that can be used to create gene-based models; and 2) to promote collaboration between crop modelers and plant geneticists and breeders. Individuals involved in these fields have the common objective of predicting phenotypes of crops, but using different approaches. We drew from our experiences in a project aiming to construct a gene-based model.
